The reason for this is that the excel or word document you received was created in Microsoft Office 2007. MS Office 2007 uses new file formats and any file created with it will not be viewable in MS Office 2003 and XP. For excel it uses the file type .xlsx and for word it uses .docx .
There are file format converters available witch will allow you to open documents and excel sheets created in MS Office 2007 in previous versions of MS Office.

Hi BJ – I’m having huge internet problems and have resorted to my MTN memory card – currently downloading at 56kbps – this file would take 1hr 31 min to download – I’ll wait ….hopefully the wireless company will sort the problems out tomorrow. As a matter of interest, do you know the file extension .wps? Would the file converter be able to convert this?

If you dont recognize a file extension visit this website http://www.filetypeshelp.com. They have a database with file extensions descriptions. There are two .wps file extensions. The one being a microsoft works word processor document and the other being kingsoft writer document. It is most probably the first.
